Our True Identity

We’ve been surrounded by Christianity for many centuries, Mormonism for 200 years, yet it seems Christ consciousness hasn’t penetrated most Western people, even those in Utah. Most don’t know that Christ lives in them (Galatians 2:20).

We’ve been surrounded by Christianity for many centuries, Mormonism for 200 years, yet it seems Christ consciousness hasn’t penetrated most Western people, even those in Utah. Most don’t know that Christ lives in them (Galatians 2:20).

It seems that we may be too distracted by the idolatry of worshiping a man who lived 2,000 years ago to realize what that man was actually teaching—that Christ lives in us, in each and every one of us. We are all Beloved Sons and Daughters of God, even as Jesus was.

I believe that Christ is who we are, fundamentally. Christ is our essential identity, our Divine nature in God, God made Incarnate in our flesh and bones. Christ is our truest and deepest Self. Christ is our biological Life, Breath of our spirit, Light of our consciousness, and Truth of our Being, our most basic and real existence in the universe. When we strip away the ego, when that “man of sin” falls away and is crucified, all that is left is Christ in God. This is Pure, Holy, Sacred, Whole, Complete, Perfect, Anointed, just as it is. That is who and what we are, but we are usually blind to it. Our ego, this sense of self-awareness and selfishness, makes us blind, and is the cause of our Fall from the Presence of God. It is the veil. Our own egoic self separates us from this experiential oneness in God, this direct at-one-ment in God.

I perceive that this is the realization, recognition, remembrance, awakening that every true spiritual teacher has taught since the beginning of time all around the world, who all realized it, although they have used many different terms and symbols and allegories to point to this exact same reality (such as Buddha, Buddha-nature, oneness, true Self, Divine union, knowing thyself, centering, Ground of all Being, I AM, Atman, inner self, pure consciousness, Perfect Man, Messiah, etc.). It is the same. It is the perennial universal Gospel, good news, Dharma, the way of Life and liberation/salvation.

The perennial struggle is in coming to know this for ourselves, directly, personally, intimately, immediately, firsthand, primarily, experientially. Simply being told that this is “the truth” is not anything like experiencing it for one’s self in one’s own Self and Being. It is this experiential knowledge that is “the truth,” and coming to embody it in our lives, that makes all the difference in the world.
